Slypway: Rethinking What It Means to Be an Underwriter

Insurance has spent years talking about automation.

Faster quotes. Better workflows. More data. More AI.

All of that matters.

But at Slypway, we think the more interesting question is this:

What if technology could actually make insurance more human?

Slypway is a Canadian insurance technology startup currently operating in stealth mode, founded around a simple idea: technology should not push brokers and underwriters further apart. It should remove the administrative work standing between them.

For years, underwriters have increasingly found themselves buried in submissions, emails, spreadsheets, document requests, data entry and repetitive processing.

Yet none of that is really what makes a great underwriter valuable.

Great underwriting has always been about judgment, experience, market knowledge and relationships.

It’s about knowing what business you want.

It’s about helping brokers understand where opportunities exist.

And it’s about working together to build a profitable book of business.

Meet the underwriter

Slypway is being built around a different model.

Instead of the underwriter disappearing behind an email address or anonymous portal, we want them to become visible again.

Imagine an insurance environment where brokers can actually meet the underwriters behind the products they sell.

They can see what an underwriter specializes in.

They can understand their appetite.

They can follow changes in what they’re looking to write.

And, most importantly, they can start a conversation about where they might build business together.

The relationship changes from:

Can you quote this?

to:

What can we build together?

That is a very different insurance marketplace.

The underwriter becomes part of the distribution strategy

Slypway co-founders Andrew de Ruiter and Craig Arnatt approach the problem from opposite sides of the industry.

Andrew comes from underwriting.

Craig comes from insurance technology.

One understands how risk decisions, capacity and broker relationships work in practice. The other understands how much technology can remove from the process when it is designed properly.

Together, they’re exploring a different definition of the modern underwriter.

Not simply someone who receives submissions and accepts or declines risks.

But someone who can build a following.

Communicate appetite.

Develop a specialty.

Identify opportunities.

Work directly with brokers.

And ultimately help create the market around the products they underwrite.

In that world, the underwriter becomes more than a gatekeeper.

The underwriter becomes part of the brand.

Insurance has always been social

Before portals, APIs and automated submission systems, insurance was built largely through relationships.

Brokers knew their markets.

Underwriters knew their brokers.

People talked about opportunities.

They figured out what could be written.

Technology improved many parts of that process, but somewhere along the way it also created more distance between the people involved.

Slypway wants to reverse that.

Think of it as a professional social environment built around insurance distribution.

Brokers discover underwriters and products.

Underwriters communicate what they’re looking for.

Both sides can identify opportunities.

And the technology underneath the platform handles more of the repetitive work required to move a risk through the system.

AI can help classify submissions.

Technology can match risks against appetite.

Rating engines can calculate premiums.

Workflow automation can manage documents, invoicing, compliance and policy administration.

But the relationship remains human.

That’s the point.

AI shouldn’t replace the underwriter

There is a lot of discussion today about whether AI will eventually replace parts of underwriting.

We think that’s the wrong way to look at it.

Slypway isn’t building AI to replace underwriters. We’re building technology so underwriters can become underwriters again.

Remove the repetitive work.

Give them better information.

Connect them directly with distribution.

Then let their expertise become more valuable, not less.

The same applies to brokers.

Instead of endlessly searching for markets or sending submissions into generic inboxes, brokers should be able to understand who wants their business and have a direct relationship with the people making the underwriting decisions.

Built in Canada. Currently in stealth.

Slypway is being built in Canada, and we’re still early.

Very early.

We’re deliberately developing the platform in stealth while we work with people inside the industry to challenge assumptions about how insurance distribution should work.

We don’t believe the future of insurance is another portal.

We think it looks much more like a network.

A place where brokers and underwriters build relationships, discover opportunities and develop markets together, with technology quietly doing the work in the background.

And now we’d like some help building it.

Want to help shape Slypway?

We’re opening Slypway to a small group of beta testers.

We’re looking for:

Brokers who want better access to markets and underwriters.

Underwriters who want to communicate their appetite, build broker relationships and explore a more modern way of developing a book of business.

This is an opportunity to get involved early, challenge our thinking and help shape how Slypway works before we bring it to the broader market.

If that sounds interesting, we’d like to hear from you.
